Norway-based developer Wrongtools have recently launched the Salmesykkel – a free pump organ instrument compatible with the full retail version of Native Instruments Kontakt.
The Wrongtools Salmesykkel is a sampled reed organ that comes with quite a few interesting features and sound design options. Those include mixable layers of sound, crossfading dynamics, an array of audio effects, factory presets, creative modes and more.
Behind the Salmesykkel
For general knowledge, in case you’ve wondered, the word “salmesykkel” is basically the Norwegian term for the harmonium instrument (the pedal harmonium). In English, it translates to “hymn bicycle” as a reference to the instrument’s pedaling mechanism.
Pump Organs: How Do They Work?
The foot pedals in reed organs are used to pump air to the bellows that are inside the instrument. Each time a key is pressed on the keyboard, it allows air to pass through and vibrate a thin strip of metal which produces a specific musical tone. These metal pieces are called reeds (and are also sometimes referred to as “tongues”, but this is more common when talking about the hand-pumped harmonium, like the Indian harmonium).
